When you climb 100 metres into the air in the middle of the sea, you better know your tools — and your limits. Wind Farm Technicians inspect, maintain, and repair offshore turbines: gearboxes, nacelles, electrics, and blades. The work mixes height, weather windows, lock-out/tag-out discipline, and long rotations on CSOVs or walk-to-work vessels.

Two paths dominate job ads in 2026. The first is the WTG / service technician track — GWO Basic Safety Training, OEM product courses, electrical or mechanical trade background. The second is the rope-access blade specialist — IRATA Level 1–3 plus GWO Blade Repair, hanging on composites when drones and elevators are not enough.

Two Roles Employers Confuse — And You Should Not

Ads titled “Wind Turbine Technician” usually mean the service path. Ads with IRATA + Blade in the title mean vertical composite work. Mixing them on your CV without hours in both is a fast rejection.

What a Wind Farm Technician Actually Does

  • Inspect blades, gearboxes, and nacelle systems for wear and faults
  • Perform electrical or mechanical repairs at height
  • Use turbine elevators or rope access to reach work areas
  • Coordinate with the control room, CSOV crew, and other techs
  • Enforce turbine lock-out / tag-out before anyone enters a live system

Reality check: Offshore wind is not “green tourism.” You work weather windows, 12-hour shifts, and confined nacelle spaces with limited data access. Pre-job briefings and synchronised transfer windows decide whether you work that day — not your motivation poster.

Rates above are typical contractor day rates for North Sea / NW Europe campaigns. Permanent OEM O&M salaries exist but are a different product — compare apples to apples when negotiating.

GWO — The Non-Negotiable Stack

GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) is the industry gate for most offshore wind sites:

  • Sea Survival
  • First Aid
  • Fire Awareness
  • Working at Height
  • Manual Handling

Often preferred or required next:

  • GWO Enhanced First Aid
  • GWO Slinger Signaller (deck/transfer synergy)
  • GWO Blade Repair — for composite path
  • STCW / BOSIET + CA-EBS — when mobilising via CSOV or oil-and-gas-style vessels
  • OGUK medical + climber fitness exam

OEM product training (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, GE) is what turns a GWO certificate into a hireable technician. GWO alone is not a job offer.

IRATA — When the Elevator Stops Being Enough

Rope access techs are the vertical engineers of wind. They hang from towers in gale-force weather, weld or inspect where cranes cannot reach, and — on blades — grind, fill, and protect composite leading edges that salt and rain destroy year after year.

Blade tech core tasks:

  • Ascend/descend blades on certified rope systems
  • Apply composite filler, grind, polish damage points
  • Install leading-edge protection tapes or foils
  • Photographic and written damage reports
  • Safe setup and post-job reporting with vessel supervisors

IRATA ladder: Level 1 (technician) → Level 2 → Level 3 (supervisor / rescue lead). Logbook hours matter. Fake hours get you removed from sites that audit IRATA records.

Field Story — Dogger Bank CSOV Campaign

⚠️ Weather windows beat heroics

During cable commissioning at Dogger Bank, turbine techs worked from a CSOV with DP2 positioning and daughter craft. They ran gearbox torque checks, blade cleaning, and electrical calibrations on 2-week rotations with limited data access. Success depended on pre-job briefings and synchronised movement windows between weather changes — not on “pushing through” a swell that closes the gangway.

Field Story — Belgium Blade Campaign

✅ Fatigue is a quality risk

On an offshore wind farm near Belgium, a blade team repaired 16 turbines in 6 weeks using rope access from CSOVs. Each blade repair averaged ~4 hours in position, with real-time radio to vessel supervisors. Team rotation was essential — extended vertical time in wet and cold conditions produces errors long before it produces overtime glory.

How to Break In — Practical Order

  1. Pass medical and climber fitness — OGUK / equivalent before expensive courses.
  2. Complete GWO BST early — then add Working at Height refresh before it expires.
  3. Get a trade foundation — electrical, mechanical, or hydraulics. Wind OEMs hire tradespeople who can learn turbines faster than tourists who only have GWO.
  4. Target OEM or Tier-1 O&M — Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, GE, or major service contractors for first logged hours.
  5. If blade path: IRATA Level 1 + GWO Blade Repair, then build a materials/hours logbook.
  6. CSOV / W2W familiarisation — understand transfers, DP weather limits, and gangway shutdowns.
